From an offensive perspective, 2023 was not a good year for the Kansas City Chiefs. There were moments this season when wide receivers could not create separation against defenders nor secure perfectly thrown passes. However, once the postseason began, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense looked like the unit we have become accustomed to knowing over the years. Because they performed well in all three playoff games, they are back in the Super Bowl for a second straight time. Defensively, this is by far the best they have looked during the Mahomes/Reid era.
They ranked high in many statistical categories, such as points allowed, yards per game, and against the pass. A few names to watch out for in Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers is wide receiver Rashee Rice. The rookie talent out of SMU finished the season on a solid note and looks to become the Chiefs’ primary target in the future. If the 49ers defense struggles to get pressure, expect Mahomes to put Rice in a position to make significant contributions on Sunday.
49ers Scouting Report
The current era of the San Francisco 49ers resembles the great teams that the organization has produced in previous decades. They have elite talents on the offensive and defensive sides and remain at the forefront of top-tier quarterback production. However, missing the coveted Lombardi Trophy separates the current version of the 49ers from previous great teams. Since Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach, the 49ers have been a part of the Super Bowl conversation since 2019. The franchise has appeared in three NFC championship games and two Super Bowls.
They have molded players such as Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle into some of the best players to play their positions. However, they have also added personnel that have made their team even more potent. Since being traded to the 49ers last season, Christian McCaffrey has asserted himself as the league’s top running back. The former Stanford Cardinal is coming off a year where he won his first-ever NFL rushing title. His 2,203 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns earned him the league’s Offensive Player of the Year recipient for 2023.
At quarterback, San Francisco remains ahead of the class in terms of productivity. Second-year starter Brock Purdy picked up where he left in 2022. The former seventh-round selection threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. Even though he has shown that he is more than capable of putting the Niners on his back, Sunday’s Super Bowl will be another opportunity for Purdy to prove that he is a quarterback that does not need to be carried by an elite roster.
Score Prediction
The outcome of Super Bowl LVIII will determine which quarterback can make the most plays against the opposing defense. Both units are ranked near the top identical categories and have areas where they can be exposed. Throughout the season, especially during the playoffs, San Francisco’s defense has lacked a consistent pass rush, while Kansas City had issues stopping the run. So, with that being said, which weakness will be exploited on Sunday? Andy Reid and the Chiefs will have the upper hand in tomorrow’s matchup. He and Mahomes will successfully figure out how to move the football on the 49ers’ stout defense. They will produce more points than expected and leave Super Bowl LVIII with their third-world title.
