This is Derrick Branch here at SportsView360.com, covering the NFL. Today, we’re previewing and breaking down the opening week matchup between the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys. The showdown kicks off the 2025 season on Thursday Night Football.
This matchup is dripping with storylines. For Philadelphia, it’s the start of their title defense after an unforgettable 2024 season capped by their second Super Bowl championship in team history. For Dallas, it’s another year with Super Bowl aspirations—though to some, it feels like the team is rebuilding. We’ll see how it all plays out.
It’s been 29 years since the Cowboys last appeared in an NFC Championship Game. And all eyes are on what this Dallas defense will look like without Micah Parsons, who was shockingly traded to the Packers last week. That leaves a lot of questions for a unit that is already changing.
Key Matchups to Watch
Dak Prescott vs. the Eagles’ Defense
Dak Prescott enters 2025 with pressure on his shoulders. After injury issues, he’s now working with a rebuilt offensive line and new weapons like George Pickens alongside CeeDee Lamb. The test is tough right away: Philadelphia’s defense is anchored by Jalen Carter and a secondary featuring Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.
Saquon Barkley vs. the Cowboys’ Front Seven
Saquon Barkley ran wild in his first season with Philadelphia, topping 2,000 yards and winning Offensive Player of the Year. Some even argued he deserved MVP. It could be a long night if Dallas can’t slow him down—especially without Parsons. New additions like Kenny Clark, Jack Sanborn, and Kenneth Murray Jr. must step up immediately.
Eagles WRs vs. Cowboys Secondary
A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith remain one of the NFL’s elite duos. Dallas faces uncertainty as Trevon Diggs is still recovering from injury. The Cowboys’ inexperienced personnel at the position may be thrown into the fire, which could create mismatches in Philly’s favor.
X-Factors
Dallas Cowboys: The run game.
Last season, Dallas ranked near the bottom of the league in rushing production. With new backs like Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders joining the mix, the Cowboys must establish balance early to take pressure off Prescott.
Philadelphia Eagles: Jalen Hurts’ efficiency.
Hurts wasn’t asked to put up huge passing numbers last season, but his accuracy, turnover-free play, and rushing ability made the offense nearly unstoppable. With a new offensive coordinator, seeing how the scheme evolves in 2025 will be interesting.
Score Prediction
Dallas is always talented enough to make things interesting, but the loss of Parsons and the Eagles’ firepower on both sides of the ball might be too much. On their home field, in front of a fired-up Philadelphia crowd, I see the Eagles pulling away late to win 28–21.
That puts Philadelphia at 1-0 as they begin their title defense.
So what do you think? Can Dak Prescott and the Cowboys finally change the narrative, or will the Eagles remind the NFC who’s still on top? Drop your predictions in the comments below, and smash that like button if you’re ready for Week 1!
