Depth, Defense, and a New QB: Breaking Down Memphis Football So Far

University of Memphis Athletics.

The Memphis Tigers have roared out of the gate in 2025, posting a perfect 3-0 record through the first three weeks of the season with dominant victories over FCS Chattanooga (45-10), Georgia State (38-16), and Troy (28-7). Following an 11-2 campaign in 2024 that included a Frisco Bowl win over West Virginia and a No. 24 AP Poll ranking, expectations were high despite significant roster turnover. The departure of program pillars like quarterback Seth Henigan, receivers Roc Taylor and Demeer Blankumsee, and linebacker Chandler Martin posed challenges, but head coach Ryan Silverfield’s retooled roster—bolstered by 20 transfers and high-upside freshmen—has answered the call. With a home-heavy schedule and +760 CFP odds, Memphis is firmly in the American Conference title hunt, trailing only Tulane and Navy in the Week 4 power rankings. As the Tigers prepare for a marquee Week 4 clash against SEC powerhouse Arkansas, here are four key lessons we’ve learned about the current roster through their impressive early-season performances.

1. Brendon Lewis Has Stabilized the Quarterback Position

The loss of Seth Henigan, the American Conference’s all-time leading passer with 14,266 yards, left massive shoes to fill, but senior transfer Brendon Lewis has proven he’s up to the task. The former Nevada and Colorado quarterback, with 36 career starts and 1,270 rushing yards, has brought a dynamic dual-threat dimension to offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey’s spread offense, which averaged 434.9 total yards in 2024. In Week 1 against Chattanooga, Lewis completed 22-of-28 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, adding significant rushing yards in a 45-10 rout. He cleaned up his game in Week 2 against Georgia State, managing a 38-16 win with no turnovers, and in Week 3 against Troy, he threw for 213 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-25 attempts, avoiding picks despite a strip-sack fumble that led to Troy’s only score.

His 72% completion rate against Troy—well above his career 56.9%—shows growth, and his 32 rushing yards on scrambles highlight a mobility Henigan lacked. Lewis’s ability to escape pressure and execute designed runs has kept defenses off balance, creating opportunities for running backs like Sutton Smith and Greg Desrosiers Jr. His performance contrasts sharply with Georgia State’s struggling quarterbacks (12-of-25, 69 yards in Week 2), and his poise under Troy’s pass rush (three sacks allowed) bodes well for tougher tests like Arkansas. However, the Week 1 interception and strip-sack underscore the need for better ball security. If Lewis sustains his efficiency and builds chemistry with receivers like Cortez Braham, his projected 2,500+ total yards could propel Memphis to a 6-0 start before facing South Florida, keeping their CFP hopes alive.

2. Sutton Smith Is Emerging as the Offensive Star

The running back room was touted by Silverfield as the team’s deepest unit, and so far, Sutton Smith has been the breakout name. After scoring twice against Georgia State, Smith delivered again at Troy with 113 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Paired with veterans Greg Desrosiers Jr. and Frank Peasant, Smith’s explosiveness has helped Memphis maintain its identity as a run-first program.

Through three games, the Tigers are averaging over 200 yards rushing per contest. That balance has kept the offense humming even as the passing attack works to identify a true WR1. If Smith continues to develop into a consistent 100-yard threat, he could become the focal point of Memphis’s attack heading into conference play.

3. The Defense Looks Like a Strength, Not a Liability

Last year’s defense often leaned on offensive shootouts to bail them out. This year, the script has flipped. Coordinator Jordon Hankins’s unit has dominated, holding Troy to just 112 yards of total offense in Week 3, including only 40 on the ground. The front seven, led by William Whitlow Jr. and transfers like Sam Brumfield and Drue Watts, has created havoc at the line of scrimmage, forcing multiple turnovers in each of the first three games.

The secondary has also been steadier than expected, with transfers Kamari Wilson and Chauncey Logan Jr. helping erase big plays on the back end. If this defense continues to perform at this level, Memphis won’t just contend in the American Conference — it could field one of the Group of Five’s top units.

4. Depth Is the X-Factor for a Title Run

Silverfield has repeatedly praised the depth of his roster, and the results back him up. On offense, eight receivers have already seen significant snaps, even if no clear star has emerged. On defense, more than 30 players have rotated through in three weeks, particularly along the defensive line and linebacker corps.

That depth showed itself in the win over Georgia State, where Memphis wore down the Panthers in the second half, and again at Troy, where the Tigers’ fresh legs allowed them to dominate the trenches for four quarters. In a long season, especially one with high-stakes matchups against Arkansas, South Florida, Navy, and Tulane still to come, depth may be Memphis’s biggest advantage over its rivals.

At 3–0, the Tigers are right where they hoped to be, and more importantly, they’re learning what kind of team they are. Lewis provides steady leadership at quarterback, Smith is breaking out as a star in the backfield, the defense is playing at an elite level, and depth is proving to be the secret weapon.

If Memphis can continue to grow in the passing game while maintaining its defensive edge, the Tigers will be in the hunt for the American Conference title well into November.
