Week 9 American Power Rankings: South Florida Takes Over No. 1 Spot After Memphis Shocked by UAB

Conference Chaos Opens the Door for the G5 Crown

The American Athletic Conference title picture got a significant shake-up in Week 8, with the conference’s winningest program suffering a brutal loss and the rest of the contenders holding serve, albeit with varying degrees of struggle. The biggest story, without a doubt, was Memphis’s stunning upset loss to a two-win UAB team, which not only ended the Tigers’ undefeated season but also threw the race for the American Conference Championship Game and the coveted Group of Five berth in the College Football Playoff into chaos.

Now, four teams—South Florida, Navy, Tulane, and North Texas—all sit at one or fewer losses, with Navy, South Florida, and Tulane owning perfect conference records. South Florida and Tulane, both 6-1 overall, and the undefeated Navy Midshipmen (6-0) are firmly in the driver’s seat. Memphis, despite the loss, is still in the mix, but its margin for error is gone. The potential for the American Conference to be the Group of Five’s representative in the expanded CFP remains strong, but only if one of the top teams can run the table without another unranked loss. The performance of USF, Navy, and Tulane this week solidifies the notion that the G5 bid is likely to come from this trio, provided they avoid the pitfalls that caught Memphis. The looming conference schedule is now a minefield, with every week a potential elimination game for the top spot.

1. South Florida: 6-1, 3-0 conf: The Bulls dominated Florida Atlantic 48-13, moving to 3-0 in conference play with an impressive offensive performance. Quarterback Byrum Brown and the offense are clicking, and they have successfully navigated the recent chaos to take the top spot.

2. Navy: 6-0, 4-0 conf: The Midshipmen were on a bye in Week 8. They maintain their spot as the conference’s only undefeated team, but the lack of a recent game means they cede the top ranking to an in-form USF squad. Their perfect conference record remains a strong argument for their standing.

3. Tulane: 6-1, 3-0 conf: In a high-stakes showdown, the Green Wave took down Army 24-17, extracting revenge from last season’s title game. A gutsy late-game drive secured the crucial win, keeping them perfect in the league and firmly positioned in the championship race.

4. Memphis: 6-1, 2-1 conf: The Tigers’ national-best winning streak is over after a shocking 31-24 road loss to UAB. Their offense stalled late, and uncharacteristic mistakes proved fatal. It’s a costly loss in the conference race, but their overall resume keeps them ahead of the 2-1 group.

5. North Texas: 6-1, 2-1: The Mean Green bounced back impressively from their first loss, thrashing UTSA 55-17. The offense, led by an elite passing attack, looks reinvigorated and ready for its upcoming run of contenders.

6. East Carolina: 4-3, 2-1: ECU won a competitive game against Tulsa 41-27 on Thursday night. The Pirates showed grit and big-play ability, securing a key win to remain in the thick of the conference’s second tier.

7. Temple: 4-3, 2-1 conf: The Owls picked up a convincing 49-14 road win at Charlotte, getting their second conference victory. Temple is playing its best football of the season and controls its own destiny for a bowl bid.

8. UAB: 3-4, 1-3 conf: The Blazers pull off the upset of the week, stunning Memphis 31-24 for their first conference win. This massive victory under an interim coach is a season-defining moment and a huge step toward respectability.

9. Army: 3-4, 2-3 conf: The Black Knights came up short in a hard-fought battle against Tulane, losing 24-17. They continue to play tough football, but the loss drops them to 2-3 in the conference standings, making their path to the title game much more difficult.

10. Florida Atlantic: 3-4, 2-2 conf: The Owls were soundly beaten by South Florida, 48-13. The loss exposes a gap between FAU and the conference’s top tier, and their two conference wins now feel less significant.

11. Rice: 3-4, 1-3 conf: Rice was on a bye week. They slide down due to the UAB and Temple wins, but will hope the week off helped them reset for the final stretch of the season.

12. UTSA: 3-4, 1-2 conf: The Roadrunners were dominated by North Texas, losing 55-17. Their struggles continue to mount in conference play, and they face an uphill climb to reach bowl eligibility.

13. Tulsa: 2-5, 0-4 conf: The Golden Hurricane put up a decent fight against ECU, but ultimately fell 41-27, remaining winless in the conference. They need to find a way to close games to avoid the bottom of the rankings.

14. Charlotte: 1-6, 0-4 conf: Another poor showing for the 49ers, who were routed at home by Temple, 49-14. Charlotte is in full rebuild mode and looks increasingly like the conference’s clear last-place team.
