Falcons Land Major Defensive Upgrade by Signing Safety Justin Simmons

The Atlanta Falcons made a significant leap toward defensive dominance by signing veteran safety Justin Simmons to a one-year deal, signaling their serious intent to contend in the NFC South. The deal, reportedly worth $7.5 million guaranteed with a potential $500,000 bonus if Simmons is named a first-team All-Pro, was confirmed by team sources to The Athletic.

Simmons, a standout safety known for his ball-hawking abilities and leadership, adds a formidable presence to a Falcons secondary that already boasts cornerback AJ Terrell and Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates. His addition further solidifies a defense that has rapidly transformed from a liability to a strength.

The Falcons have been aggressive in their offseason moves, notably trading a third-round pick to the New England Patriots for elite edge rusher Matt Judon. Now, with Simmons anchoring the defense’s back end, Atlanta’s secondary has become one of the most feared units in the NFL.

Since entering the league, Simmons has established himself as one of the premier safeties. Drafted by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Simmons quickly became a cornerstone of their defense. He has amassed multiple Pro Bowl selections, earned first-team All-Pro honors, and consistently ranks among the league leaders in interceptions. Known for his versatility, Simmons excels in both pass coverage and run support, making him a complete player and a true game-changer on the field.

The Falcons’ front office has made clear their intentions to win now, starting with acquiring former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency. With Simmons now in the fold, Atlanta has dramatically improved its defense, positioning itself as a serious contender in the NFC South.

These strategic moves have the Falcons on the cusp of reclaiming the NFC South title, a crown they haven’t worn since 2016. With a retooled roster and star-studded lineup, Atlanta looks poised to make a deep playoff run, perhaps more, as they head into the 2024 season.
