A Fresh Start for Bryce Young? Trade Inquiries Could Unlock His No. 1 Pick Potential

The Carolina Panthers have received multiple trade inquiries about 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, just days after he was demoted from the starting quarterback role, a league source confirmed. Despite Coach Dave Canales’ assurances that the team isn’t “really considering” trading Young, the interest from other franchises comes amid Carolina’s disappointing start to the season. After an 0-2 start and Young’s struggles through 18 career games, the Panthers handed the starting job to veteran Andy Dalton for their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Young’s early NFL performance has been concerning, with the quarterback completing only 55.4 percent of his passes for 245 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions this season. His passer rating 44.1 would be the league’s worst since Ryan Leaf’s infamous rookie campaign in 1998. Dalton, in contrast, threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns during his sole start last season, further complicating Young’s path to reclaiming his role.

However, while the Panthers may not be actively shopping Young, the reality of the situation suggests a trade might be the best course for both the team and Young himself. Carolina, a franchise clearly in rebuild mode, lacks the talent and resources to provide the young quarterback with the support he needs to reach his full potential. With a roster deficient on both sides of the ball, staying in Carolina could stifle Young’s development, while a move to a better-structured franchise might give him the tools to succeed.

If the Panthers continue on their current trajectory, they are projected to secure the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, marking the second time they’ve held that top spot in three years. For Young, a trade could offer a much-needed reset, allowing him to flourish in a more stable environment. For the Panthers, a clean break would clear the way for a potential new beginning at quarterback as they rebuild.
