Dallas brings in a developmental arm with starter upside to back up Dak Prescott.
According ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Dallas Cowboys have added a new name to their quarterback room, acquiring former Tennessee standout Joe Milton in a trade with the New England Patriots. In exchange, the Cowboys are sending a 5th-round pick to New England, while also receiving a 7th-round pick as part of the deal.
The move comes just weeks after longtime backup Cooper Rush departed in free agency, leaving a void behind Dak Prescott. Milton, known for his rocket arm and elite physical traits, becomes an intriguing developmental option for Dallas as they reshape their QB depth chart heading into 2025.
Originally drafted by the Patriots, Milton never cracked the starting lineup in New England but showed enough promise in camp and preseason action to earn interest from other teams. Standing at 6’5″ and 247 pounds, Milton possesses one of the strongest arms in recent memory, paired with the athleticism to make plays on the move.

While there are still areas of his game that require refinement—particularly consistency and touch—Milton gives the Cowboys a backup with long-term potential, and perhaps even a future starter if developed properly.
Dallas now has a low-risk, high-upside insurance policy behind Prescott, and with Brian Schottenheimer taking over as head coach, Milton will get a fresh start in a system known for tailoring schemes to quarterbacks’ strengths.
The Cowboys still hold multiple picks in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft but appear to have addressed one of their key needs ahead of time.
