Saturday was filled with multiple marquee matchups to kick off the 2025 college football season. As for Memphis, 2025 marks a new season and another opportunity for head coach Ryan Silverfield to lead the program to a conference championship.
The Memphis Tigers open their 2025 season against the Chattanooga Mocs with a blowout victory. The game started with a game-changing play by the Memphis defense.
Deep in the Tigers’ territory, the Mocs attempted to kick a field goal that would have given them a three-point lead over Memphis. But the kick was blocked by defensive end William Whitlow Jr. With good field position to work with, Memphis took over on downs and recorded its first touchdown score of the 2025 campaign. The first touchdown run was by running back Greg Desrosiers Jr.
After another impressive stop by the defense, the Tigers would add to their lead with another touchdown run. This time, it was done by running back Sutton Smith. The Tigers would add four touchdown scores to their lead as they cruised to a 45-10 victory over the Mocs. The new starting quarterback, Brendon Lewis, was impressive during the season opener. He completed 22 out of 28 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown pass, and one interception.
Lewis was also the Tigers’ leading rusher with 81 yards and one touchdown. Overall, most of the Tigers’ success came from the running attack. The Tigers accounted for a total of 233 yards on the ground. Defensively, the unit was stout for all four quarters. They limited Mocs QB Camden Orth to only 114 yards passing and two interceptions.
The Memphis defense also returned one of Orth’s picks for a touchdown in Saturday’s victory. The opener against Chattanooga gave Tiger fans a full glimpse of what type of team the program will be as conference play looms. So far, the Tigers’ approach utilizes a vaunted running attack as the primary option.
What Lies Ahead?
With Week 1 now in the books, the Tigers will head on the road to play the visitor role in back-to-back matchups. First on the slate is Georgia State. Afterwards, they go to Troy, Alabama, for a rematch with the Trojans.
