In the rapidly evolving landscape of college football, the 2024-2025 season marks the dawn of a new era with the much-anticipated expansion of the College Football Playoff (CFP) from four to twelve teams. The sport has evolved from the contentious days of split national championships to the controversy-laden BCS era and the CFP. With the introduction of this expanded format, the path to the national championship is more competitive and unpredictable than ever before.
In this article, I’ll break down my early projections for the inaugural 12-team playoff field, examining the teams I believe have the best shot at securing a spot in what promises to be the most exciting postseason in college football history. From perennial powerhouses to emerging contenders, this outlook will glimpse each team’s possible playoff landscape and challenges.
SEC
Georgia: Despite some cracks showing last season, Georgia remains one of the most talented teams in the country. Their depth, especially on defense, and a favorable schedule should keep them in the playoff hunt. With a mix of veteran leadership and new stars, Georgia is poised to contend for another national title.
Texas: Texas has the pieces in place to make a return to the playoffs. With a veteran quarterback and significant upgrades through the transfer portal, the Longhorns are expected to capitalize on their experience and talent to challenge for the SEC title and secure a playoff spot.
Alabama: Even with Nick Saban no longer at the helm, Alabama remains a formidable force. Under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, the Crimson Tide are expected to surprise many and remain a powerhouse in the SEC, with their defense and skill positions keeping them in playoff contention.
LSU: During the offseason, LSU lost three dynamic playmakers to the professional ranks of the National Football League. Also, their play caller, Mike Denbrock, decided to head back to the Midwest and take on the same role with the Fighting Irish. However, the personnel that will step into their place are expected to be as special as the players they are taking over for. A playoff berth will likely come if new defensive coordinator Blake Baker can help establish consistent production for the Tiger’s defense.
Ole Miss: The program has been trending upward since Lane Kiffin became the Rebels head coach. Under Kiffin, the Rebels have had multiple 10-win seasons and two New Year’s Six Bowl appearances. With the personnel assembled over the years under Kiffin, the Rebels have shown they can compete with some of the best college football teams. With the playoffs expanding, they can show that a playoff contender can be established in Oxford, Mississippi. The backend portion of their schedule is tough, but if they can stay above water, they’ll have a strong argument to receive a postseason berth.
B1G
Ohio State: Ohio State is under pressure to finally get past Michigan and make a deep playoff run. With a loaded roster, especially at wide receiver, and a solid defense, the Buckeyes have the talent to contend for a national title. Ryan Day’s job might depend on their performance this season.
Penn State: Penn State’s talent nationally gives them a legitimate shot at the playoffs. With a balanced attack and a favorable schedule, the Nittany Lions could finally break through and challenge the likes of Ohio State and Michigan for Big Ten supremacy.
Oregon: Oregon, now part of the Big Ten, has the talent and coaching to make a serious playoff push. The Ducks’ high-powered offense and improving defense will be key as they adjust to a new conference and face some of the toughest competition in college football.
ACC
Clemson: Clemson is looking to return to its dominant ways, and this season’s schedule offers them a chance to do just that. With a solid defense and a returning quarterback, the Tigers are well-positioned to reclaim their spot at the top of the ACC and secure a playoff berth.
Miami: Miami has the potential to make the playoffs if they can live up to the talent on their roster. With NFL-bound quarterback Cam Ward leading the way, the Hurricanes could be the surprise team of the ACC, especially if they can navigate their tough schedule successfully.
Florida State: Florida State is on the rise again, and with DJ Uiagalelei under center, they’re expected to be one of the ACC’s top teams. Their success will depend on how well they handle their big matchups, but their talent level suggests they could make a deep playoff run.
Group of Five
Memphis: With the replenishment of talent added during the offseason through the transfer portal and key personnel returning, the Memphis Tigers should be well-equipped to represent the Group of Five in the playoffs this season. Their only major hurdle could be an early season loss to Florida State, but if they can avoid additional losses, they could secure a spot in the expanded playoff field.
