Have you watched the current version of the New Orleans Saints lately? They’re on the verge of having one of the worst records in the National Football League for 2024. After losing to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, the Saints are now on a six-game losing streak. The skid is the longest they have been on since 2005. There’s still a chance to make the playoffs, but the Saints must climb out of one gigantic mess.
If they fail to do so, they will be rewarded with a top-six pick in next year’s NFL Draft. We started our mock draft content a little earlier for today’s post due to how the Saints perform. The current draft order will likely change if the Saints go on their annual late-season push to the playoffs, which has lowered their positioning in the past. We utilized Pro Football Network’s Mock Draft simulator tool to conduct our latest draft.
Early Saints 2025 Mock Draft Results
Round 1, Pick no.6: Luther Burden III
Round 2, Pick no.39: Donovan Jackson, LG
Round 3, Pick no.68: Luke Lachey, Penn State, TE
1ST Round: Luther Burden III, WR (Missouri)
I understand that a large majority of the Saints fan base wants Dennis Allen and Derek Carr gone, but the reality is that the franchise is tied to their current starter for at least another season. Financially, it will hamper any free agency maneuvers the organization may want to pursue with the impending new regime if they cut ties with Carr. With Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan off the board, the Saints pursue the next best option at the receiver position in Missouri’s Luther Burden III. New Orleans could have drafted a quarterback like Shedeur Sanders, but his father, Deion Sanders (Coach Prime), may have wanted his son taken by another team.
Adding Burden to the fold gives the Saints another explosive playmaker at the position, along with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. I believe that Burden is a talent who can come and contribute immediately to the Saints’ offense. He brings a dynamic skill set to the NFL, combining versatility with playmaking ability that could translate immediately to the pro game.
2nd Round: Donovan Jackson, LG (Ohio State)
New Orleans discovered a cornerstone player for the offensive line when they selected Taliese Fuaga in last year’s draft with the 14th pick. Also, the 2022 first-round selection, offensive tackle Trevor Penning, may not be a wasted pick. It has not been perfect, but he has gotten better each week. However, the Saints must add more young talent to the offensive line. With the 39th pick, we go to a place the Saints have always looked to when it comes to adding young talent: Ohio State University. The selection of left guard Donovan Jackson could give the Saints a future anchor at the position. Jackson is best as a downhill run-blocker, thick and heavy on vertical double-teams with connected elbows and hips to generate displacement.
3rd Round: Luke Lachey, TE (Iowa)
In the third round, we could have added another QB to an already crowded room, but we decided to search for another pass-catching option for Carr. After passing on tight end Sam LaPorta out of Iowa in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Saints don’t make the same mistake again. In the third round, New Orleans selected Iowa tight end Luke Lachey. Current players at the position, Juwan Johnson and Foster Moreau, are solid contributors, but the Saints need a game-changer to fold. Listed at 6’6, 247 pounds, Lachey has the potential to become the safety net at tight end that Carr has not had since coming to New Orleans.
Paving the Way for A New Era of Saints Football
The Saints’ recent struggles underscore the urgency for change as they find themselves at a crossroads. With playoff hopes dimming and the reality of a potential top-five draft pick looming, New Orleans must confront the issues that have led them to this low point. The current season has exposed the limits of sticking to a familiar but faltering approach. As the Saints gear up for what could be a transformative offseason, bringing in fresh talent like Luther Burden III, Donovan Jackson, and Luke Lachey offers a glimpse of hope. These young players could inject the spark that’s been missing, giving the team new playmaking abilities, improved offensive protection, and reliable options at crucial positions.
However, draft picks alone cannot fix what’s broken. For New Orleans to truly move forward, they must embrace a new vision and finally turn the page on an era that, while once glorious, has long since passed. The Saints have a devoted fanbase eager to rally behind a team with purpose and promise. It’s time for leadership to reimagine the future, starting with a fresh perspective that can rebuild this team’s identity and restore the pride of New Orleans football. The Saints deserve nothing less.
