Saints QB Battle Heats Up: Did Spencer Rattler Just Pull Ahead of Tyler Shough?

This year, the New Orleans Saints played their first preseason game in the Caesars Superdome. While the result ended in a tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the spotlight remained on the quarterback competition between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler.

Quarterback Breakdown

  • Tyler Shough: 9-of-12 passing, 66 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, sacked twice
  • Spencer Rattler: 18-of-24 passing, 199 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Shough got the start and played through the first half. He was efficient but limited, taking two sacks and failing to generate much scoring production. Rattler entered in the second half and provided more of a spark, delivering nearly 200 yards through the air with one touchdown. However, he also threw a costly interception in the red zone — a missed opportunity that could have sealed the game.

The contrast was clear: Shough was steady but unspectacular, while Rattler showed more upside but also took risks.

Red Zone Struggles

One of the lingering issues for the Saints’ offense continues to be finishing drives. The team had multiple chances in the red zone but failed to capitalize. Rattler’s interception near the goal line highlighted those concerns. In preseason, execution matters more than stats, and the Saints need to find a way to turn opportunities into points consistently.

Offensive Standouts

Despite quarterback inconsistencies, several skill players stood out:

  • Mason Tipton: 6 catches, 100 yards, including a 45-yard reception. Tipton’s breakout performance likely secures him a roster spot.
  • Dante Pettis: 4 catches, 57 yards, 1 TD. Reliable and productive, Pettis looks safe for the 53-man roster as well.
  • Velus Jones Jr. & Kendre Miller: Both continue to provide depth in the run game, showing the Saints may have flexibility in the backfield rotation.

Still, questions remain about the offensive line. Cesar Ruiz, a 2020 first-round pick, continues to draw criticism for his play, and overall protection remains a concern.

The Bigger Question: Who’s QB1?

So, did Rattler do enough to take the job? From this game alone, the answer leans yes. He looked more dynamic than Shough, kept the offense moving, and made plays downfield. But the interception in the red zone will keep the competition open heading into the final preseason game against Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos.

Head coach Kellen Moore hinted that the Saints were close to naming a starter before this game. Rattler’s performance may have delayed that decision, as the staff continues to evaluate both quarterbacks in practice and game action.

Looking Ahead

The Saints close the preseason against Denver with one last chance for Shough or Rattler to separate themselves. Rattler may have the edge for now, but the battle is far from over.
